Everything from the materials we choose to the design of our living spaces is expected to change as we continue to navigate our way through the pandemic. I believe we all are feeling overwhelmed with technology since that's the personal thing that sticks to us all time, and now handmade is the antidote.

The perfect imperfections of hand-carved and woven materials are the opposite of the screen-life we are all living. We are trying to bring nature into our home, the massive obsession for plants and greenery continuously. As a trend, rattan and cane furniture have been skyrocketing in popularity over the past few years. Compared to the stone, the cold texture of metal and glass, organic materials and wooden elements are still the mainstream of this year as it makes people feel the warmth of home.

Another nature-inspired trend is dried foliage, pampas grass, and other decorative elements with delicate organic shapes. These dried foliage elements are very harmonious and go well with the warm earthy colours. Especially paired with the original style of the ceramics, tiles and vases evoke the back to nature look.

Coming, I'll be sharing the next element, which gonna be the feature wall and textured wall. It is a special treatment to the wall by adding vertical stripes of decorative panels with different colours and materials. Even different faceted shapes can throw in lots of highlights to the interior space and your home.

Fluting and reeding are commonly found in any vertical stripes design, inspired by the ancient greek column, which added subtle touches of luxury, a more soothing effect and textural detailing into the space. Not just only the wall can change the vibe or feeling, side table, headboard, glasses, anything that can be designed in shape may use a fluting element to enhance the whole space's atmosphere.

Furthermore, some great elements such as material matching are very popular this year, making the space more layered. It's not just limited to enhance the overall texture, but it will not make people feel bored or monotonous. Most importantly, without much extra work, you can achieve a completely different effect.

Let's talk about design style. You might not hear of Japandi, but it's been commonly seen around the society, such as IKEA's furniture or any commercial location. So, what is Japandi? Japandi is a hybrid style that combines traditional Japanese minimalism with Scandinavian design elements. They both emphasize the importance of creating function-driven spaces defined by a handful of statement pieces rather than an abundance of décor. It's their differences that help make this mash-up especially interesting.

Japandi is also influenced by the ancient Japanese philosophy of Wabi-sabi. Wabi-sabi is a way of life that values slow-living, contentment and simplicity, as well as the Scandinavian practice of hygge, which embraces comfort, cosiness and wellbeing. Japandi blends the smooth, modern lines of Scandinavian design with the sleek, functional elegance of the Japanese aesthetic. It is minimalist yet welcoming and is all about using neutral tones, lots of textures and natural materials. Given how 2020 turned out, this kind of global mood where we were forced to look beyond our former more superficial values, this concept resonates more than ever with us.

Alright! Have you remembered all those elements?
#1 Warm Neutral Colour Palette
#2 Curves
#3 Arch & Organic Shape
#4 Rattan & Natural
#5 Wall Features
#6 Japandi
There's no need to apply all six elements into one design, maximizing the potential of those one element in one space can be a big twist in the space. It sounds sophisticated, but it can be fun and meaningful.
