This proposal is trying to revive the cultural heritage in Ipoh and giving a new life to those abandoned buildings around the old town area by providing a new related space, activities and facilities for locals and tourists.

The site is a 1900s townhouse located within the old town centre. It is an original façade that is preserved to express the uniqueness and individuality of this heritage building. The proposed design also maintains its interiors as much as possible but encapsulate a new life to each space through the selections of materials and finishes.

Those street wall paintings did contribute to local businesses by attracting tourists, yet unlikely developing the tourist understanding regarding the heritage and story of Ipoh. Additionally, public transportation is another primary concern in Ipoh, unlike Penang and Kuala Lumpur, which is highly convenient for tourists to travel and directly impacts the number of tourist arrivals in the state.

Due to the inconsistency of maintenance and the government misguidance of conservation. Several materials such as clay, timber and stone which used to construct this historic building. Many timber features can be found within the space of the buildings, such as louvred timber shutters & air ventilation, timber windows and doors with frames, and timber partitions in the hall and rooms. These magnificent architectural heritage sites should be preserved. However, it’s been gradually destroyed due to area refurbishment or project development. As time goes by, the future generation is missing the opportunity to glimpse the heritage beauty.

With the intention of preserving that early century ambience, this proposal focuses on using locally sourced materials, furniture and fittings. To use all existing timber materials onsite, these are engraved and re-used as walls panels. These newly revived surfaces softly reflect natural lighting throughout the interior, brightening darker areas and reducing the need for artificial daylighting.
